What is Kirtan?
A Westerner’s Guide
KIRTAN is a gathering of people in a group setting to sing and "hum" to the musical accompaniment of traditional Indian music.  Over the centuries, the tradition has been upheld because of the transmission of sacred sound vibration through both the voices and the instruments.
What happens during kirtan?

  • Restoration of balance between left & right brain functions
  • Mantra yoga as a call and response exchange between musicians & audience
  • Bhakti yoga as an individual’s response to the common experience of feeling is an awakening of the spiritual heart
  • "Going home with the tone": after the kirtan comes the subtle or dramatic change in attitude toward life
